Your Message: Estimado Presidente Calderon Hinojosa: I am writing to express my serious concerns about the safety of members of the Centro de Apoyo al Trabajador (CAT) in Puebla, Mexico. I have received disturbing reports concerning a recent assault against members of the CAT because of their support for an independent, democratic union at the U.S.-owned auto parts factory of Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) in Puebla. The incident took place on April 28, 2010, when two members of the CAT, Enrique Morales Montaño, who is also a former JCI worker, and Coral Juarez Melo were harassed, physically assaulted and subjected to death threats while visiting Johnson Controls workers in the community of Santo Toribio, Tlaxcala, Taxcala. The assailant, the son of CROM delegate Magdaleno Texis, reportedly threatened them stating that they, other members of the CAT, and anyone else “making trouble” for his father would be killed. I urge your government to take appropriate measures immediately to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of Enrique Morales and Coral Juarez and their family members and associates, as well as all members of the CAT. I also urge your government to investigate the probable involvement of the Confederacion Regional Obrera Mexicana (CROM) in recent threats, assaults and harassment against Enrique Morales and Coral Juarez and their family members and associates, other members of the CAT, and the JCI workers belonging to the Coalición Organizativa de Trabajadores de Johnson Controls (Organizing Coalition of Workers of Johnson Controls). Lastly, I urge you to take appropriate steps to ensure that the right of workers at the Johnson Controls factory in Puebla, Puebla to be represented by the union of their free choice is fully respected.
