In 2004, we issued our
first public report outlining our social responsibility efforts. In the
days that followed, it wasn't always easy to see headlines like "Gap admits
factory abuses." But this was more than offset by the positive responses we
received from the media, our employees and other stakeholders who told us how
much they appreciated our candor – and how they wanted to work with us to
address the challenges described in the report. Their response renewed our
commitment to improving garment factory conditions and reinforced our belief
that talking about challenges is an important step toward resolving them.
In 2005, we published our
second social responsibility report, providing additional detail about the
steps we're taking to improve conditions in the garment factories where we do
business, as well as our commitment to our communities, our efforts to reduce
our impact on the environment and the ways we're striving to create an
inclusive and inspiring place for our employees to work.
