Stop Sweatshops! The Video

Stop Sweatshops! The Video

UNITE (now UNITE HERE), 1997
8 minutes

What it's all about:

Suitable for all age groups, Stop Sweatshops! dispels some myths about sweatshops and draws attention to the labour violations and exploitation that take place in the garment industry. This video takes a close look at sweatshops in the U.S. through interviews with former garment factory workers and news footage of the discovery of a Los Angeles sweatshop in 1997. Stop Sweatshops! also presents a demonstration organized by students against GAP.

How to use it:

Stop Sweatshops! is a fairly general video. At eight minutes in length, the video provides a good overview of the issues without getting into a lot of detail. The audience should therefore be given background information on sweatshop issues, including why they exist and how retailers are responsible. This video is best suited an introduction to labour rights violations in the garment industry. It could also serve as a way of moving away from sweatshop stereotypes and introducing the fact that sweatshops exist in North America.

Notes on video:

The video is quite dated and therefore needs to be accompanied by more recent information on what has been accomplished by the anti-sweatshop movement since it was made.
